One of the secrets of both sticking to a budget and minimising food waste is meal planning. There are various apps you can download but none I have found as user friendly as the good, old pen and paper! I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not always great at meal planning and, even when I do, life has a habit of changing our plans but I am trying to get back in the habit.
Looking around for tips I found an image of a menu planning jar, thought what a great idea, bought some lollipop sticks and then promptly did…..well absolutely nothing at all!
I am now intending to go through my recipe file, my books and all those odd magazine cuttings (as well as my Pinterest pins) to write down all the things we cook, pop them in a jar and then use them as inspiration for my meal plans.

Last week we actually cooked all the meals on the plan. A couple in a slightly different order but still all the planned meals were prepared and cooked. If I had put this post up yesterday, we would already have failed this week. Yesterday involved an English Breakfast, wood splitting and a trip to the pub so the planned Sunday roast is now a Monday roast.
Monday – Roast Shoulder of Lamb
Tuesday – I’m working so the Other Half will be in charge, I suspect Leftover Lamb Curry may be on the cards.
Wednesday – I’m working again so he is still in charge
Thursday – Pork Chops in some form of creamy mushroom sauce
Friday – Chicken stir fry
Saturday – something with gnocchi – probably similar to this spinach and chicken recipe.
A day later than normal as I have only sat down to write a plan this morning. Last week did not go to plan as we only managed three dishes from the list but we also had more leftovers than we expected so lamb curry lasted two days. As this week is a little quieter I hope we will be a little better.
Monday – Mini Chicken Schnitzel with oven roasted chips
Tuesday – Nigel Slater’s Braised Pig Cheek
Wednesday – I’m out so the other Half will be catering for him and Small Person
Thursday – a Pinterest inspired Mojo Pork Tenderloin
Friday – a good friend of mine has threatened to forage some wild garlic which I have never cooked with, the intention currently is to make a chicken and wild garlic risotto
Saturday – Chilli, either made with beef like here or with Chorizo

Sunday – the traditional roast lamb
Monday – curry from a jar with the leftovers
Tuesday – Chicken in butter, wine and thyme sauce but with spinach this time!
Wednesday – Sausage and mash
Thursday – Out for dinner
Friday – pig cheeks, probably this Nigel Slater recipe

Man flu has hit our house this week so the Other Half has been feeling very sorry for himself although a hot toddy or two has helped with the blocked nose if not the temperature. It has already made the meal planning go off plan.
